ADDRESSING MISTAKES & OBSTACLES

Teachers should conclude this unit with the following note:

 In the years since the Beta Israel began its mass immigration to Israel, the State of Israel has made efforts to right some of the wrongs that were made against the Ethiopian Jewish community. In 2008, the Knesset officially recognized the festival of Sigd (see Unit 3) as a national Israeli holiday. In a major victory in 2020, Israel’s Chief Rabbinate formally agreed to the 1973 ruling of Rabbi Ovadia Yosef concerning the Jewish status of the Beta Israel (see Unit 7). Still, members of the Beta Israel continue to experience evident forms of discrimination in Israel, and the challenges have not fully abated.
