Did you know that August 14th is International Popsicle Day?
In Hebrew, a popsicle is called an “Artik,” and although you are probably thinking that the name relates to a certain circle near the North Pole where it’s really cold (and as you will see, you wouldn’t be totally wrong), the Hebrew word “Artik” actully comes from the name of the company that produced many of Israel’s popsicles at one time, founded by a group of Belgian Jews 70 years ago.
They named their company ‘Artik’, a corruption of the international word “arctic” relating to the North Pole. In Israel, today the word ‘Artik’ is used in general for all types of frozen desserts on a stick.
Ono enthusiastically celebrates International Popsicle Day and hope you can enjoy a delicious popsicle on August 14th.
