Jerusalem Day is an Israeli national holiday celebrated on the 28th day of the Hebrew month of Iyar (which is also the 43 day of the counting of the Omer). This year it falls on the evening of June 4th and the day of June 5th, 2024. The holiday marks the reunification of the city of Jerusalem which took place during the Six Day War in 1967.
The national holiday was established by the Knesset in the “Jerusalem Day Law”.
In addition to its official name, some call the day Jerusalem Liberation Day, Jerusalem Freedom Day
or Jerusalem Reunification Day.
The State of Israel also designated this day to be a memorial to all the Ethiopian Jews (Beta Israel) who perished while making Aliyah. It is estimated that 4,000 Beta Israel died during the transmigration through Sudan to Israel.
