Ono Academic College marks Israel’s Day of Remembrance for the Holocaust and Jewish Heroism which is observed every year on the 27th day of the Hebrew month of Nisan. This year the memorial day begins on Sunday night May 5th and concludes at sundown on Monday, May 6. The day is dedicated to commemorating the memory of those murdered during the Holocaust by the Nazis and and their collaborators between 1935-1945. The day also recalls the memory of the acts of Jewish heroism and rebellion in those days.
The State of Israel passed a law enshrining this day as one of national remembrance and the following mourning customs are practiced: lowering the flag to half-mast in state institutions, the sounding of a siren across the country at 10:00 am when all activity ceases, and memorial and commemoration ceremonies. Entertainment venues and restaurants are closed on the eve of Holocaust Memorial Day.
On Sunday May 5th, Ono’s student union held a “Remembrance in the Living Room” event at 9:00 PM in the auditorium of Ono’s new campus at Savyon junction. In recent years, it has become more common to hold “Remembrance in the Living Room” events, alongside larger scale commemorations. These events are characterized by one or more survivors sharing their personal stories. On Monday, May 6, at 9:45 AM, immediately prior to the national siren and two minutes of silence. Ono students, faculty and staff gathered in the auditorium for a memorial ceremony.
