On the occasion of the Tish’a B’Av holiday and fast, Rabbi Moshe Reiss, Director of Ono Academic College’s Religious Zionist Program delivered a powerful message noting that on this day, more than ever, we need to perform an accounting of the soul. These crazy days require us to live with more unbridled love to our fellow citizens and behave in a spirit of brotherhood because, indeed, we have no other home.
The 9th Day of the Hebrew Month of Av, which this year falls on the eve of August 12th and August 13th, is marked by Jews around the world as a day of mourning and soul searching regarding the many catastrophes that have afflicted the Jewish people over the generations on and around this date. The most striking tragedies were the destruction of the first and second Temples in Jerusalem, according to our sages, because of the sin of baseless hatred. As a result, the nation of Israel was exiled from its land 2,000 years ago. According to tradition, following the messiah’s arrival, Tish’a B’av will become a national day of celebration.
