UNIT 1: STARTER

The teacher should begin the unit with the following introduction:

Imagine a family separated during a time of political distress. Can you think of examples like this?

The students are likely to reflect on stories that they have read or heard about, perhaps from the Holocaust or more current events.

The teacher should invite 2-3 students to briefly share examples. Then, teachers should say to their students:

Here’s my question: If at a time of political distress, a family is unfortunately separated, would groups of relatives who are torn away from the rest still be considered family, even if they are very far apart?

Student opinions will differ (in digital classrooms, this question can be posed as a virtual survey). Let’s presume that most students respond “yes,” while fewer will respond “no.” In each case, the teacher should ask the students to explain their response.
