MY FAMILY
THE BETA ISRAEL CURRICULUM
Teachers should begin this unit by presenting the following questions to the students:
What kinds of things would you do to try to help a group of people living in serious distress?
What if these people lived very far away? What if you have never met them or anyone like them?
How much energy would you spend? Would you invest money? Would you give up your time?
Following the discussion, students should be asked one more question:
Would you do more to help if you learned that that this group of people are your (distant) relatives?
In discussing this general question which can (and should) apply to helping all people, teachers should direct students toward thinking about the various people who helped the Beta Israel leave Ethiopia.
